DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit woman who was drunk when she killed a friend with a slow cooker during an argument over presidential politics was sentenced Monday to at least 23 years in prison.

A judge followed the recommended sentence in a plea deal between prosecutors and Tewana Sullivan, who has a history of bipolar disorder but was declared competent to go to trial.

Sullivan, 51, beat Cheryl Livy, 66, with a slow cooker at the victim’s Livonia apartment in October. At the time, Sullivan’s blood-alcohol level was 0.41 — five times the level for drunken driving in Michigan, defense attorney John McWilliams said.

“I didn’t take my medication like I was supposed to, so I did mess up,” Sullivan told Wayne County Judge Michael Hathaway. “Without me taking my medication, that was the worst thing I could ever have done.”

McWilliams said the two were arguing about the 2016 race for president.

“One was for one major political party and the other was for the other major political party,” he said.

The prosecution memo notes that in addition to the hidden cameras at the mikvah, Freundel surreptitiously videotaped a domestic violence abuse victim in the bathroom and bedroom of a safe house that he had established for her so she could escape her husband’s violence.

“I thought I saw a holy man of God, a man whom I could trust to protect me from outside evils, but I have come to see the blackness which hid beneath the garments,” the victim said in a court document. “The dreadful symptoms I once banished have returned. I cry when I am awake, and I scream out against the darkness in the nightmares of my sleep. I have constant flashbacks of the worst times of my life, as I am forced to repeatedly relive the horrors I once knew. I dare not look at myself unclothed in a mirror, for it is a glaring reminder of what was taken and stolen.”

Jordan Andrew Kearney, 23, had been indicted on a third-degree felony charge because of a previous conviction of misdemeanor family violence assault.

According to prosecutors, Kearney and his girlfriend checked into a hotel on May 29, 2014. At one point, he got angry with her and burned her with a cigarette, prosecutors say. He then locked the door and refused to let her leave the room. So the girlfriend went to take a bath. But the argument continued. Kearney dragged her out of the tub and hit and kicked her until she could no longer move, prosecutors say. Then, as she lay there, Kearney urinated on her.
